Well I guess I’ll start by showing you this:
One of my neurotic personality traits is that I organize everything from my Figma file to my breakfast cereals, and I always make sure the remote control is mostly parallel with the edge of the coffee table when I leave the living room.
So does it make me better than you?
I mean…maybe!
(No…the answer is no.)
It’s just how I work. It gives me a sense of control and security and there’s an odd sense of joy about it for me that I can’t really put my finger on.
Candidly, my neuroticism probably holds me back from time to time. When you’re so worried about precision, sometimes you avoid taking risks.
I tend to find that some of the most talented designers I’ve ever seen rarely name their layers. Or use Auto Layout. Or even understand components or prototyping or how to publish a library.
Does it really matter?
Nah.
What matters is your ability to communicate an idea and/or solve a problem.
I don’t care if you went to culinary school or not — if you can cook a delicious meal, I’m gonna eat it either way, even if your technique wasn’t by the book.
You probably have six to eight months before this topic goes viral again on Twitter, so in the meantime, why not be a little reckless and solve some cool problems in cool ways without all the flim-flam.
Or you know, you just do you.
It doesn’t really matter.
If you can cook a delicious meal, I’m gonna eat it either way.
❤️ Jon
